Street Sides

Gustav Hoiland

It’s the same street, one side and the other. Strip-mall buildings, sidewalk, three lanes, boulevard, three lanes, trendy garden, stone sidewalk, superextraluxurydoubleupscalepalace. Four shirts for $9.99 on one side, one shirt for perhaps $9,999.99 on the other side. It’s the digit & decimal divide.

This contrast helps explain the next change, which I saw when I walked one block off the strip. More precisely, behind those buildings in the below picture (the tall blue one and others), there’s… well, sand. Dusty, broken up fenced off abandoned parking lots, and … a nice mountain view beyond.

Admittedly one of the more interesting weekends of late. A bringer of perspective and glimpses of American culture not seen elsewhere. Already seems so long ago.

Next somewhere.
