Located in Austin, Texas,  the Edgeland House is a contemporary dwelling buried under an insulative green roof. It’s a re-interpretation of the Native American Pit House – typically sunken, it takes advantage of the earth’s mass to maintain thermal comfort throughout the year.

Both visually and functionally,  the Edgeland Residence touches on architecture as site‐specific installation art and as an extension of the landscape. The house is broken up into two separate pavilions, for the living and sleeping quarters, and requires direct contact with the outside elements to pass from one to the other. The property sets new standards for sustainability while providing great aesthetic qualities through its small footprint and integrated mechanical features.

Cincinnati from Devou

Tonight I stopped by Devou park in Covington, Kentucky.  Covington is just across the river from Cincinnati and Devou park sits atop a hill overlooking the city.  It was a cool and cloudy night.  The smell of snow surrounded me like a blanket of fog.  The city illuminated the sky as cars screamed below me.  I was in the presence of thousands yet on top of that hill, I felt completely alone and isolated.

Planet Surprises

City Hall is the headquarters of the Greater London Authority (GLA) which comprises the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. It is located in Southwark, on the south bank of the River Thames near Tower Bridge.

The building has an unusual, bulbous shape, purportedly intended to reduce its surface area and thus improve energy efficiency, although energy use measurements have shown this building to be fairly inefficient in terms of energy use, with a 2012 Display Energy Perforance Certificate rating of “D”. It has been compared variously to Darth Vader’s helmet, a misshapen egg, a woodlouse and a motorcycle helmet. Former mayor Ken Livingstone referred to it as a “glass testicle”, while the present mayor, Boris Johnson, has referred to it as “The Glass Gonad” and more politely as “The Onion”. Its designers reportedly saw the building as a giant sphere hanging over the Thames, but…
